The brand new Fiesta ST180 X49RS hybrid turbo was rumoured at the start of spring 2024. Pumaspeed produced 10 units and sent them to some distributors around the world for evaluation. After several months of testing we are happy to announce that the sale of the new X49RS is now ready to roll.

So what is different to the older X47R and X48R units.?
The X47 and X48 models have been without doubt a huge success with over 1700 unit sold worldwide, reported power outpiuts from 315-356bhp have been seen and some with larger injectors evern more but with cars becoming a little older now we wanted to revisit the turbo and mapping the create a package that was going to sensible cost and be custom tuneable by the customer at home to different power levels. So we added more compressor flow, and a little more machine work to the exhaust housing.

So what did we do ?
1. Software is the key to performance. Without this 'cement in the wall' , all the best parts in the world are  just a pile of bricks.
The number 1 Job was to find some brand new tricks inside the ST180 ECU which Maxdout absolutely nailed for us, again.

2. The next was to spec a turbo that would allow extra flow but not add lag. We already had the X48R but we needed a little more so the X49RS was born, with a few subtle extra tricks and another inlet blade to push more air for the same RPM's boy did it deliver.

3.The easy part was to buy a car and kit it out, this spec below is typical of most Stage 3 cars:

Off to the Dyno for some Development time with the goal of creating some mind bending new numbers. Mind bending numbers is a big statment, lets qualify what we mean. We wanted safe low boost power that the Customer use on a slightly older engine that would still net good torque and when pushed deliver the Pumaspeed thrill we deliver best. We also wanted to account for daily driving so we opted to use Esso 97 grade fuel found at our Local Sainsburys, not the best 99 grade found at Shell or Tesco Momentum 99.
We also wanted a full suite of maps so the customer can custom tune their own car by selecting the boost level and power output of their choice

What are the physical differences between the X47 Classic, X47R and the new X48R?
- The X47 Classic is rated to 325 bhp and has a 43mm impeller with 7 blades. Silver compressor cover with silver compressor wheel.
- The X47R is rated to 340 bhp
stock injectors 355bhp with 30% bigger Double Sealed Injectors and has a 46mm impeller with 7 blades. Silver compressor cover with anodised red compressor wheel.
- The X48R is rated to 345 bhp stock injectors 360bhp with 30% bigger Double Sealed Injectors and has a 46mm impeller with 8 curved blades to grab and compress more air. Dark grey compressor cover with anodised red compressor wheel. 

The new X48R lifts the lid on power achievable from a hybrid turbo, it maximises the stock Ford fuel injectors and will boost the car around to the 345bhp mark (fuel and modifcation dependent). It can also be mapped with the larger injectors if required to add a tad more power across the rev range, we saw a further 5-10bhp on back to back testing.
 

Whats the cost difference?
Quite simply we have only lifted the cost of this unit to £40 more than the previous X47R. With over 1200 X47 and X47R sold since 2016 you can never go wong with this incredible hybrid turbo and now even more so with the new and improved X48R.
 

Why the X Series turbo range over their competitors?
With well over 10 units sold, the X series range of turbos to suit the Fiesta ST180 have proven power and reliability running through their DNA. The turbo range has been used in street and competition all across the world, including USA and Australia.

The X Series range of turbos are the only hybrid turbos to consistently get into the 12's and below quarter mile times in various countries on various customer and dealer cars. With trap speeds in excess of 116mph, this shows the true pulling power of the turbocharger with no let up at higher speeds.

The X47 started life as a 290-300whp capable turbo but the Pumaspeed passion for development has pushed us to try and get the unit up by around 10% in wheel horse power terms. We now have 3 available configurations listed above, all of which use the unique 45.1mm turbine shaft with varying angles of clipping to the blades to add extra flow.

The options explained:

Actuator - The stock actuator is one of the few parts of the stock turbo setup that works well even at over 300bhp. That's not to say however that it can't be improved upon. Swapping it out for a Turbosmart will allow peak boost levels to be held further up into the rev range meaning you effectively widen the usable power curve, ultimately resulting in a faster car. 7psi tends to be better for road use due to its more progressive boost curve making it more predictable to drive, particularly in wet road conditions. 11psi is ideal for track use due to its agressive boost curve resulting in a more instant response, exactly what you want on the track!

Dump Valve - The stock plastic dump valve can often suffer from fatigue over time due to it's location on the side of a hot turbo, in worse case scenarios the valve can crack, causing a boost leak and ultimately a loss of power. An aftermarket dump valve removes this problem by replacing the affected parts, or the entire valve itself with a metal replacement, atmospheric or vent to atmosphere (VTA) dump valves are also available to increase turbo noise when you lift off the throttle.

Turbo Exchange - Due to the nature of keeping the cost down on the X Series turbo range, we rely on return customer stock turbo units, this enables us to sell the hybrid turbo on an exchange basis. This means you have three simple options to choose from. You can keep your stock turbo for a surcharge fee of £200. You can send your exchange stock turbo after you receive your hybrid turbo, meaning you pay the £200 surcharge up front which is then refunded on return of your turbo (Most Popular Option). Alternatively you can send us your stock turbo first and avoid paying the £200 surcharge altogether.
