NEW MAXDOUT X49 STAGE 3R LAUNCH

Chapter 11. 300-330bhp

Vehicle tuning constantly evolves, and Pumaspeed remains at the forefront, driving innovation with each new project.
This New MAXDOUT X-49 Stage 3R software represents a significant upgrade, designed to offer reliable power gains while maintaining engine longevity and efficiency.

Its not often the game changes, however at Pumaspeed we never stop pushing a vehicle, project after project. 

Back in 1999 company founder Tony built the company's first project - the 460bhp Puma 4x4 Cosworth. This year, Danny has started "Project Aero", a carbon fibre sequential gearboxed 950kg 1.6L Mk8 ST with 380bhp. 

NEW STAGE 3 X-49 SOFTWARE LAUNCH

We thought the most popular Ford Fiesta ST180 had been neglected for too long. Couple with the fact that the MAXDOUT Software had been copied and plagiarize by more tuners than we care to imagine, we felt it needed a bit of a revamp.

The software masters at MAXDOUT were consulted as was our Turbo Specialist.

The brief was simple, create a software and turbo package with the following attributes:

  • That will not cost the earth like the S280 or Garrett GT Series
  • Will run lower Boost Levels
  • Reduce stress on Older Engines
  • Promote Longevity and Reliabilty from a Turbocharger not running at 100%.

The X47-48 Series has sold well over 1600 units, it has been pushed to the limit time and time again, and beyond, to make the headline 350bhp numbers. Pushing this hard inevitably has lead to some failures. We wanted to promote reliabilty as the number 1 reason, and with that in mind lower boost map had to be number 1 on the list. Even the newest ST180 are from 2017 which is becoming a little old so protection of the engine asset is also high on the list for the customer.

We wanted to create a user customisable software suite that would allow the user to be able to run from 300bhp to the maximum that the new Turbo would allow; as a result we hoped a solid and repeatable 340-345bhp on stock injectors.

So what did we do ?
1. Software is the key to performance. Without this cement in the wall, its just a pile of bricks.
The number 1 Job was to find some brand new tricks inside the ST180 ECU which Maxdout absolutely nailed for us, again.

2. The next was to spec a turbo that would allow extra flow but not add lag. We already had the new X48R but we needed a little more and the X49 was born to deliver, with a few subtle extras.

3.The easy part was to buy a car and kit it out, this spec below is typical of most Stage 3 cars:
 - Vulcan V2 Non Res Race Exhaust
 - R-Sport Sports Cat
 - R-Sport 2.5 inch Big Boost Pipe Kit
 - R-sport Pro 450 Bad Boy Intercooler
 - R-Sport 70mm Cross Over Pipe
 - X49 Turbo and CNC Elbow
 - STOCK ACTUATOR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 - R-Sport Gemini Induction Kit
 - Brand New Boost Solenoid
 - Brand New Ford OE Stock Injectors

You may wonder why we chose the above specification.
The reasoning is straightforward:

Value for Money. Performance. But most importantly, they are always in stock at Pumaspeed.

 - Vulcan V2 -  It is very inexpensive at £370 and at 70mm will flow over 400bhp if required.
 - R-Sport Sports Cat  -  its very inexpensive and can flow good numbers whilst still passing emmision tests.
 - R-Sport 2.5 inch Big Boost Pipe Kit - its the least expensive Big Boost Pipe Kitand lets face it a 2.5 inch pipe is a 2.5 no mater what brand it is.
 - R-sport Pro 450 Bad Boy Intercooler - its the best FACT ( the log belows shows a lift of 4-5 degrees on the dyno with the fan on Half Speed
 - R-Sport 70mm Cross Over Pipe  - again its the least expensive Pipe Kit and comes with the secure seal silicon on top.
 - X49 Turbo and CNC Elbow - the CNC Elbow out flows the Hard pipe kit
 - STOCK ACTUATOR -  Why ? Cost - we wanted to keep the kit as cheap as possible , the addition of an actuator would increase the costs by over £130
 - R-Sport Gemini Induction Kit - Costs again, the Simple Cone on the end of a MAF housing works and with 2 cold air feeds it the best.
 - Brand New Boost Solenoid - We only used this as a Control so we knew the solenoid worked perfectly.
 - Brand New Ford OE Stock Injectors - We only used this as a Control so we knew the injectors fueled worked perfectly.

The very simple to take a vehicle to this level, only took the techs here a day to complete. The above bolt on parts are straightword to fit and net massive gains as seen in previous generations of X47 turbo. After the build was finished the car was shaken down on the road and datalogged with some existing versions of software. V4702 and V4920 were used which proved very powerful but as the actuator was stock the low and mid range torque was relativly low.

Off to the Dyno for some Development time with the goal of creating some mind bending new numbers.

Mind bending numbers is a big statment, lets qualify what we mean. We wanted safe low boost power that the Customer use on a slightly older engine that would still net good torque and when pushed deliver the Pumaspeed thrill we deliver best. We also wanted to account for daily driving so we opted to use Esso 97 grade fuel found at our Local Sainsburys, not the best 99 grade found at Shell or Tesco Momentum 99.
We also wanted a full suite of maps so the customer can custom tune their own car by selecting the boost level and power output of their choice

Targets for mapping
Goal 1 300bhp 1.3-1.4 BAR
Goal 2 315bhp  1.4-1.5 BAR
Goal 3 330bhp  1.5-1.7 BAR

Did we hit the mark ?
Unfortunatly for us No !  Power exceeded expectations by 11-12bhp.

Yes the combination of the new X49 Turbo and the New Maxdout Map structures over shot our initial goal by 11-12 bhp.
The target of running 1.3 to 1.4 midrange to 1.3 high range produced too much torque and 311bhp so our entry level map now has 1.2 bar low down lifting to 1.3 and then back down to 1.2 bar.
Our testing exceeded initial power targets by 11-12bhp, demonstrating the remarkable capability of the new X49 Turbo and custom software suite.
