Fiesta ST180 X-37 hybrid turbo: a stock-looking turbo with 300bhp inside.

Pumaspeed spent a long time researching the best ways to extract more power from the 1.6 EcoBoost. With Stage 1 and Stage 2 kits already under our belt, it was time to go after a Stage 3 package and gun for 300bhp. That is where the X-37 hybrid turbo comes in.

What makes it a hybrid

Pumaspeed Fiesta ST180 X-37 hybrid turbo

The X-37 hybrid turbo for the ST180

On the outside it looks just like a stock turbo, but inside it is something quite different: an enlarged turbine shaft, a 54mm seven-blade compressor wheel, a motorsport-spec thrust bearing and motorsport-spec cut-back blades. With those upgrades the standard turbo unit becomes capable of over 300bhp.

With suitable supporting modifications your Fiesta ST180 can make up to 300bhp with the X-37 fitted. The beauty of a hybrid turbo is that it is a direct bolt-on part, so fitting is easy, and you do not suffer the drawbacks of a bigger turbo upgrade: the low-down torque and power are not lost, there is no noticeable delay in spool, and you keep all your day-to-day driveability while still having the outright power of a turbo upgrade.

The Pumaspeed Red Rocket

The Pumaspeed Red Rocket was custom-tuned by Andrew at MAXD and runs the following parts: X-27 turbo and high-flow intake elbow, Milltek turbo-back exhaust system, R-Sport Stage 3 Garrett intercooler, R-Sport high-flow crossover pipe, R-Sport under-boost pipe kit, and MAXD Stage 3R custom remapping on just 1.5 bar of boost.
