Toyota GR Yaris Full Plug & Play 420bhp Hybrid Turbocharger!

At Pumaspeed we like to develop and progress new parts on our own cars before we release them to the public.
After the recent install of the SYVECS ECU and subsequent MAXD dyno developed tune to hit 355bhp with the stock vacuum actuator we went directly into some heavy duty track day testing at our local circuits, plus of course plenty of road miles.


To move past the 360-365bhp mark the stock turbo was topped out at with the stock vacuum type actuator, we wanted to use the proven method of adding extra flow with a 'Hybridised' turbo. The X47 name is synonymous with proven and reliable power, with over 1300 examples supplied and or fitted and remapped on the Fiesta ST180 alone. The X-Series brand and methodology has without doubt proven itself worldwide so we set out to design a new version for the Toyota GR Yaris.


What was the design brief that we wanted our X47 turbo to achieve?

In power terms the aim was always 400bhp and to retain the quickspooling characteristics the standard car really thrives on.

In fitting terms we needed a direct fit unit that would still use all the stock location oil and water lines, plus the stock downpipe if required.


What specification of internals did we want the X47 to have?

A ball bearing core not the simple journal hybrid system was the real goal for our new X47 unit.
Ball bearing cores are able to produce spool earlier than the normal journal bearing setup and they tend to be more durable and reliable at high load. A perfect compressor to exhaust turbine balance was also very important to stop the all important side thrust load.

Did we achieve our goals?

100% yes, the resulting X47 unit took a huge amount of research and development to produce but looking into some WRC units it was quickly realised that with some very specific CNC machine work that an amazing IHI WRC spec core with all the correct oil and water connections could be transplanted directly into the centre of the OE Yaris structure. Therefore this unit has all the strength and durability of a true motorsport turbocharger built in as standard, what a real bonus this was from the word go!


Can I just bolt this unit on and make more power?

We haven't yet tested this option on any customer cars, we believe the stock ECU incapable of dealing with the extra flow this unit provides.
The Toyota GR Yaris engine has proven itself very robust with many tuners pushing the unit well over the 400bhp mark and in some cases well beyond 400bhp to test the limits and to find the next weakest link in the motor. Almost all these big named tuners have realised the stock ECU is impossible to remap and have all gone down the route of either the SYVECS Direct Plug and Play ECU or a similar MOTEC ECU that allows total control of all engine parameters.

We understand this new ECU is not a cheap option, and in many cases at over £4500 fully installed and mapped, out of most budgets. We believe this 'investment' in the SYVECS ECU is the very best thing that you can do to open up the potential of the GR Yaris.

Remember the word investment we used? The SYVECS ECU is plug and play, you can install it and remove it for resale when you eventually finish with the car and turn everything back to stock, therefore getting a strong return on your investment.
