X57RS hits 425bhp!
Further development of the X57 series turbos and associated Maxd-Out mapping has seen us hit a new high of 425bhp (365whp) and 440nm, a fantastic figure from the 1600 EcoBoost unit!
We at Pumaspeed with the help of our X57 customers have been working extremely hard in the background to further develop the X57 mapping with the guys from Maxd-Out and we feel we are now reaching the safe limits of this turbo setup on UK spec fuelling. With well over 400bhp on tap, this track focused ST180 is now ready to dominate UK track days whilst maintaining absolute reliability and drivability.
This power and torque level is achieved with an incredible 1.95 bar peak boost, to put this into perspective hybrid turbos tend to run around 1.8 bar peak boost. Therefore you're sacrificing very little in the way of engine reliability for almost another 100bhp. We also cap torque in the mid range as we have found this to be a weakness of the 1.6 EcoBoost, running too much torque, too low in the rev range.
To run this level of power obviously requires a built engine, Pumaspeed recommend the built Blue Top engine for all road and competition use, we believe the stock engine would be capable of running this power level, however for the sake of durability we advise strongly against it.
The X57 series has somewhat evolved from the initial debut back in early 2019, mainly due to customer demand:
- The base X57 remains unchanged, combined with our full stage 4R kit, this will comfortably see around 365bhp and run well within the limits of the standard 1.6 EcoBoost motor, this is for the customer looking for that extra edge over the hybrid turbo spec ST180 such as cars fitted with the X47R.
- The X57R achieved great success, hitting 380+bhp repeatedly, however very few X57 customers wanted to go for the middle of the range turbo, they either wanted the base X57, or the top of the range X57RS, we made the decision late in 2019 to discontinue the X57R because of this.
- The X57RS has already gained the reputation as the first readily available bolt on unit for the 1.6 EcoBoost to consistently hit the 400bhp mark. Late on in 2019 we made the decision to offer a competition spec as we had customer feedback from the already large group of X57RS owners who although were happy with the immense power and quickspooling nature of the existing X57RS, felt that for competition use they would happily sacrifice a little turbo lag for another 20-25bhp, we therefore went back to the drawing board and decided to offer both Road (quicker spool, slighty lower peak power) and Competition (slower spool, higher peak power) specs.
This therefore leaves us with 2 distinct turbo options, one designed for a stock engine car, one designed to be run on a built engine.
