Here at Pumaspeed we are constantly developing the ultimate performance packages for your ST180, whether you're after a simple bolt on Stage 1 package for your newly purchased hot hatch or you're looking for the ultimate 400+bhp track weapon you've come to the right place, the home of ST180 tuning.

We understand how daunting it can be selecting the correct spark plugs or induction kit for your car so we have simplified this 4RS package deal with our recommendations below.

This 4RS kit includes by default; X57RS Turbo, MAXD Out 4RS Tuning Box, Turbosmart Actuator, Uprated Double Sealed Bosch Injectors, Pumaspeed Racing High Volume Fuel Kit, R-Sport Pro 400 Gen 2 Intercooler, R-Sport Stage 3 Intake, R-Sport Decat, Vulcan Non Res Exhaust.

 

The options explained:

For stage 4 you will need: Big Turbo, Uprated Injectors, Uprated Fuel Cam, Uprated Actuator, Uprated Intercooler (Full Height), Decat/Sports Cat, Catback Exhaust, Uprated Intake (Inc Crossover), MAXD Out Stage 4R Mapping

We also recommend the fitment of: Uprated Dump Valve, One Stage Cooler Spark Plugs, Boost Pipe Kit.

Actuator - The stock actuator is one of the few parts of the stock turbo setup that works well even at over 300bhp. That's not to say however that it can't be improved upon. Swapping it out for a Turbosmart will allow peak boost levels to be held further up into the rev range meaning you effectively widen the usable power curve, ultimately resulting in a faster car. 7psi tends to be better for road use due to its more progressive boost curve making it more predictable to drive, particularly in wet road conditions. 11psi is ideal for track use due to its agressive boost curve resulting in a more instant response, exactly what you want on the track! Pumaspeed Recommends: Turbosmart 7psi.

 

Boost Pipes - The hot side boost pipes in particular are rather restrictive on the ST180, and whilst it's not essential to change them with a hybrid turbo, it helps your new intercooler work more efficiently by smoothing the air flow entering the intercooler core. The cold side boost pipes are less important to replace, in the pursuit of ultimate performance they again aid air flow but they also tend to add a little more turbo lag. Pumaspeed Recommends: R-Sport Hot Side Kit.

 

Catalyst - The stock catalytic converter has only been designed to cope with the heat produced by the stock power level, when pushing past stage 2 power levels the cat temps will rise to a point where it will begin to cause damage to the internals of your stock catalyst, also due to the small pipe diameter they tend to be rather restrictive. A decat gives the best value for money and as a by product you will gain more noise, a sports cat won't give you a noticable noise gain but will keep you fully road legal and pass an MOT. Pumaspeed Recommends: R-Sport Decat.

 

Exhaust - For most people, the exhaust will be the first thing to change on your new car, and rightly so, not only will it give more noise personalising the car to your liking, but it will offer a performance benefit too! To a certain extent, the larger bore exhaust, the more exhaust gases you can flow and the more power you can make, however, go too far and you will lose back pressure and power. The sweet spot is 2.75 to 3 inch with the ST180. Milltek do a range of exhaust volumes from supersport being the loudest, and resonated being the quietest with non resonated sitting somewhere inbetween. The best value for money we feel is the Vulcan exhaust, offering full 3 inch performance at a bargain price! Pumaspeed Recommends: Vulcan Non Resonated Exhaust/Milltek Non Res Race.

 

Intercooler - Most turbo cars tend to benefit from an uprated intercooler once you start adding more power, the ST180 has a particularly poor stock intercooler which struggles at even stage 1 levels of power, so at stage 2 and beyond you definitely need an upgrade. The small 'stage 2' intercoolers are perfectly adequate if you never plan on running hybrid turbo levels of power, if you do plan on pushing over 300bhp, it's worth investing in a full height intercooler such as the R-Sport Pro 400 sooner rather than later, you will have a little more turbo lag with a larger intercooler but the difference is negligible. Pumaspeed Recommends: R-Sport Pro 400 Gen 2 Intercooler.

 

Dump Valve - The stock plastic dump valve can often suffer from fatigue over time due to it's location on the side of a hot turbo, in worse case scenarios the valve can crack, causing a boost leak and ultimately a loss of power. An aftermarket dump valve removes this problem by replacing the affected parts, or the entire valve itself with a metal replacement, atmospheric or vent to atmosphere (VTA) dump valves are also available to increase turbo noise when you lift off the throttle. Pumaspeed Recommends: GFB DV+.

 

Air Filter - The standard airbox is perfectly capable of coping with the air flow demands of the MAXD Out stage 1R mapping, the standard air filter however is identical throughout the Mk7 Fiesta range and a high flow panel filter really lets your 1.6 EcoBoost breathe. Alternatively you can replace the airbox with an induction kit adding much more induction noise when on the throttle, and an addictive turbo flutter when you come off the throttle. The R-Sport stage 3 kit takes this one step further by replacing the restrictive airbox hose and crossover pipe, ideal for upgrading to stage 2 and beyond at a later date. Pumaspeed Recommends: R-Sport Stage 3 Intake Kit.

 

Spark Plugs - With more power inevitably comes more heat, one way to combat this is to run one stage cooler iridium spark plugs, it's good common practice to change spark plugs on your ST180 every 25k miles so these make the ideal replacement for the OE Ford plugs when the time comes. Pumaspeed Recommends: NGK IX.

 

Injectors - More power and torque is the result of two main ingredients, more fuel, and more air. The fitment of an uprated intake kit including crossover covers the more air part, and the headroom in the stock fuel system covers the more fuel part, until you push past the 350bhp mark. This is where we believe the stock injectors begin to find their limits and you benefit from a set of uprated injectors. More fuel flow not only allows you to push more power, but it also has the benefit of keeping engine temps down that little bit better. Our double sealed injectors offer the extra benefit of more safety due to the seal postition being too high on the out of the box injectors. Pumaspeed Recommends: Uprated Double Sealed Bosch Injectors.

 

Mapping - The hot topic on every ST180 owners mind, which mapping is best for me and my car? Ultimately it's a very straight forward question to answer, MAXD Out mapping consistently outperforms it's competitors in all aspects. With stage 4RS you will see upto 385bhp and 410nm of torque, huge gains for a 1600 engine! These figures are backed up by over 6 years of ST180 development work, independent dyno results and fantastic customer reviews. 

The MAXD Out tuning tool gives you the flexibility to switch mapping, and return to stock mapping at anytime, all you'll need is a windows laptop. You also have the option of adding overrun/crackle to your stage 4RS map, simply lift off the throttle above 3500rpm and listen to your 1.6 EcoBoost pop and bang, without harming your engine. Pumaspeed Recommends: MAXD Out.
